Hisatomi Muan
Hisatomi Muan was born in 1951. He graduated the Oita Prefectural Bamboo Craft training center in 1976 and further studied under well-known local master Maeno Koyo for a year. He made living taking orders from shops serving tea ceremony practitioners for 40 years. Hisatomi specialized in Karamono style baskets and tea ceremony utensils over his long career, but it was in 2015 that he decided to expand and create his own artworks. Since then, Hisatomi has been working energetically, presenting his work though major public exhibitions.
Hisatomi is winner of the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education Prize in 16th Japan Traditional Craft Arts Wood and Bamboo Biannual Exhibition (2017), the Rookie of the Year Prize in 65th Japan Traditional Caft Arts Exhibition (2018), the Okinawa Times Prize in 54th Japanese Traditional Craft Arts Seibu Exhibition (2019), the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education Prize in 18th Japan Traditional Craft Art Wood and Bamboo Biannual Exhibition (2021), the Fukuoka Mayer’s Prize in 55th Japanese Traditional Craft Arts Seibu Exhibition (2021), and the West Japan Newspaper Prize in 57th Japanese Traditional Craft Arts Seibu Exhibition (2023).
